Friday Night Smackdown: TV Report
2/22/08
San Diego, CA at The San Diego Sports Arena
Report by Bryan Randles (Pandamonious@gmail.com)
-The show opens with a video package of the Smackdown elimination chamber match at No Way Out. As usual they show some high points of the contest and pause the footage right as the impact is about to be made. It ends with Undertaker being announced the winner and a close up of his face.
-The regular Smackdown opening credits roll.
-On this day I see clearly, that Edge is making his way to the ring with Hawkins and Rider. Cole opens his mouth for the first time by saying he’s not surprised by the reaction Edge is receiving. They discuss Mysterio’s biceps injury and Edges win.
-Edge has a mic in the ring and says, as if their was any doubt, he stands before us as world heavyweight champion. Last week in Santiago, Chile his boys Hawkins and Rider weakened Mysterio and at No Way Out he went in for the kill. He’s not only our champion, but he’s a predator and opportunist. At Wrestlemania he has the opportunity to face the Undertaker. Edge guesses that we probably think he’s afraid, but he says he’s not. He sees Taker as a chance to cement his legacy, because Taker is undefeated at Wrestlemania, just like him. Beating the Taker at ‘Mania is like winning a world championship. Edge says he’s different than all of us. He sees us in our seats and we’re afraid to take a chance, because we know we’ll all fail. Edge says he tackles the seemingly impossible and that’s why he succeeds. He’ll never lose the world title and for 15 years everyone has asked, who will finally beat the Undertaker at Wrestlemania? For those 15 years they’ve all stepped up and failed. Look into my eyes, I will not fall Edge adds. At ‘Mania it all ends for Taker, because Edge is that man.
-The bell tolls and the lights go out. The bell tolls again and the lights are back on. Taker is in the ring and taking out the Edgeheads with big boots. He hits Edge with one too and throws him into the corner. Hawkins and Rider go back at Taker and are met with chokeslams while Edge ducks out the ring and backs up the ramp to safety.
-Back from the break they advertise Mysterio speaking on his future later in the show.
-Next up is a MITB qualifier and the first participant is Shelton Benjamin and he makes his way to the ring.
-Shelton cuts a promo saying he only has one thing to say about the Money in the Bank match at ‘Mania. “Their ain’t no stoppin’ me now!”
-Next out is Jimmy Wang Yang. Cole mentions that Jeff Hardy and Kennedy have already qualified.
SHELTON BENJAMIN VS. JIMMY WANG YANG- MITB QUALIFIER
-Shelton gets the advantage early and gets Yang in the corner. He drives a shoulder into his gut and the ref breaks it up. With Shelton distracted Yang rolls him for a near fall, then Benjamin hits a big back body drop. He follows up with a power bomb into the turnbuckle for 2. Benjamin slows the pace with a chinlock placing his knee into Yang’s back. Jiimmy tries to elbow out of it, but is met with forearms to his neck that sends him back to the mat.
-Yang with back to back quick reversals that gets 2 counts, but Shelton grounds him with a back breaker then spreads him out across the knee putting pressure across his chin. Benjamin props him up on the top rope in the near right corner and rips Yang’s tank top off! He leaps to the top rope in a single bound and hits a super belly-to-belly suplex. Yang spills to the outside.
-After a pin attempt back in the ring, Benjamin puts in another chinlock. Again, Yang tries to elbow out, but Benjamin beats him back to the mat. He goes for another power bomb into the turnbuckle, but Yang gets a headscissors out of it. Small package from Yang follows for a 2 count. They struggle to get back up and hit some forearms. Benjamin hits the ropes and Yang catches him with a twirling headscissors. He goes up top and hits a big cross body off the top for a 2 count.
-Yang picks Shelton up from the mat, and Shelton pushes him into the corner. Yang comes off with a sunset flip for 2. Yang goes up top for the moonsault press and Shelton side steps it with Yang landing on his feet. Shelton runs at him and hits the inverted bulldog DDT finisher for 3.
***Shelton Benjamin is in MITB with the victory in 8:00. (**).
-Backstage Teddy Long runs into Maryse (I think that was here?) She has a special question for Teddy Long and it needs to be done behind closed doors.
-Back from Commercial, Cole says Horny has swelling of the brain and a cerebral hemorrhaging.
-On a positive note, its biscuits and gravy time as Festus and Jesse are ring bound.
-Deuce and Domino, with cherry are their opponents.
JESSE & FESTUS VS. DEUCE & DOMINO
-The bell rings and Festus goes off attacking Deuce. He whips him into the corner and charges at him. He hits a headbutt and bodyslam then tags in Jesse. Festus bodyslams his partner on top of Deuce. Jesse hits a drop toe hold and basement dropkick. Deuce comes back and throws Jesse outside and Deuce goes out after him. Jesse jumps back in the ring though and meets Deuce with a dropkick as he tries to get back in. On the outside Deuce throws Cherry into Jesse and when Jesse moves her out of the way, Deuce hits a heel kick on him.
-Back in the ring Deuce has a chinlock applied. He then starts throwing punches, but Jesse blocks it and hits a couple of his own. Deuce cuts off the comeback and hangs Jesse up on the ropes. Domino gets tagged in and comes off the top with an elbow across the back. Jesse is bleeding from the nose. They show a replay and it’s suspected that he may have broken it when Deuce hit the heel kick on the outside.
-Jesse makes a hot tag to Festus who comes in and cleans house. He hits a big spalsh on Domino. A big boot to Deuce that sends him up and over the top to the outside. He tags in Jesse who’s launched off the top rope for a splash that connects and gets the win.
***Jesse & Festus get the win in 5:00. (*).
-Raw Rebound time with Pretty Boy Floyd and Big Show.
-They run a video package on WWE’s first ever trip to South America.
-UPDATE: If anyone was curious, yes I have confirmed that it was Maryse. I did not hear a name mentioned, but it looked like her, and it was her.
-Big Daddy V with Matt Striker head to the ring.
-His opponent, Shannon Moore is already there.
BIG DADDY V VS. SHANNON MOORE
-Moore tries kicking at V’s legs and ends up getting side slammed. V steps on him while holding the ropes. V puts him in the corner and hits the V chops that drop Shannon to the mat. He picks him up for a bodyslam and throws Moore about four feet. He puts him back up in the corner and runs at him, but Moore moves. He hits a dropkick that gets no sold and some more kicks end up bringing him to his knees. Moore runs at him and V catches him with a samoan drop. He drops the 500-pound elbow and that gets the win for V.
***Big Daddy V squashes Moore and gets the win with an elbow drop in 3:00.
-Cole hypes Batista vs. MVP coming up next on Smackdown!
-A ticking clock greets us after the break and it’s MVP on his way out. An interview from earlier in the day with MVP plays in the corner of the screen. MVP thinks Batista’s win over him last week was a fluke and that he is better then ‘Tista.
-Batista follows out. Cole hypes his performance in the chamber. He said Batista was exhausted and drained by the end of the chamber match. They mention he has a broken heart from not being able to come out on top and go to ‘Mania with a title shot.
MVP VS. BATISTA- NON-TITLE MATCH
-They circle the ring and lock up, with Batista pushing MVP into the corner. The ref breaks it and MVP comes out with a kick and side headlock. Batista tries to throw him off, but MVP steadies his feet and leverages him back down. MVP gets him in the corner and puts boots to him. Batista fights back and gets control, sending MVP into the ropes for a back body drop attempt. MVP catches him though with a kick and drives him into the turnbuckle in the corner.
-MVP has Bastita laid out, with his head hanging off the apron over the floor. MVP runs at him and hits a kick to the head and his opponent falls to the mats outside. He beats the count and gets back in throwing punches. MVP catches him with a drop toe hold though and mounts him to deliver some fists. He puts on a reverse chinlock and turns it into more of a camel clutch maneuver. MVP throws some cross face forearms and pushes him to the mat. MVP sends Batista to the outside and lets the ref start counting.
***2nd HOUR
-MVP goes outside and bangs Batista’s head into the apron. He throws him back in and goes for a pin that gets 2. He puts a headlock on and Batista tries to fight out of it. MVP turns it into a front chancery position as he tries to wiggle out. Batista puts on a bear hug that gets MVP to break the hold, but MVP breaks up the hug. MVP runs the ropes, but Batista catches him for a big boot. He goes for the Bomb, but MVP squirms out of it and later hits a running kick to the head.
-He goes for the playmaker and Batista counters out of it with a big right hand, then another. He picks him up and hits the spinebuster. He then follows with a Batista Bomb and gets the win.
***Batista picks up a win, but MVP keeps the belt in 9:00. (*3/4).
-37 days until Wrestlemania.
-Cole and Coach discuss Horny’s condition in a serious tone. Cole mentioned again that Horny has swelling of the brain and cerebral hemorrhaging. According to Cole that means Horny is having bad headaches. That doesn’t seem so bad. They then roll the footage from Raw. Afterwards they head to break.
-They come back to show Erik Morales in the crowd. Cole wonders were he weighs in on the Mayweather and Big Show feud.
-Great Khali makes his way out. Singh isn’t with him as he is selling his injury or maybe real injury from the chamber match. You never know these days. Cole says he shattered his kneecap in 3 different places.
-Kane is his opponent. Cole says it’s a rematch from their epic classic at WM23. He didn’t really say that, but it’s something he would have.
GREAT KHALI VS. KANE
-Kane pounds on him in the corner and then hits a running clothesline. He goes for another, but Khali meets him with a big back elbow. Kane now gets thrown in the corner and Khali kicks at him and throws more elbows. He follows that up with a big boot and calls for the nerve hold to the shoulder muscles. He locks it in and Kane winces in pain. Kane fights to his feet and battles out with elbows. He hits a big boot and goes back off the ropes, but Khali throws a huge wild overhand chop that puts Kane down. Khali puts on the vice grip and Kane uses the ropes in the corner to get the leverage to push Khali down and he ends up top and gets the win! Shades of WM8 with Piper and Hart!
***Kane gets the win in 4:00.
-After the match Khali didn’t understand and kept the vice grip on. When he found out Kane won he was mad.
-They discuss Edge vs. Taker for Wrestlemania, then roll a good video package on Taker’s ‘Mania dominance.
-A mention is made of Ric Flair being inducted into the hall.
-Chuck Palumbo drives down to ringside for a match.
-His opponent is Matt Jackson and he’s already there. Coach expects Noble to come back next week.
CHUCK PALUMBO VS. MATT JACKSON.
-After the bell Palumbo explodes with a big forearm. Jackson comes back with a dropkick.
-Michelle McCool is watching on a monitor in the back.
-Palumbo sends Jackson to the outside and rams him into the ring post. Back inside Chuck hits a short arm clothesline and fall away slam. He goes for the pin and pulls Jackson up at 2. He hits the full throttle and gets the win.
***Chuck wins a squash in 3:00.
-After the match they show Mysterio in the back. Cole says he is addressing his future next.
-Mysterio is headed to the ring. Cole calls him gutsy and one of the greatest performers in WWE history. His daughter is at ringside and gets his mask atop the mask.
-Rey raises his fist and says, what is it San Diego? He has bad news for us. He saw the doctors and they told him his biceps in his right arm is completely torn. The camera does a close up of the arm. The doctors were surprised he was able to perform at No Way Out. Rey says he needs surgery this weekend to fix it and that means he won’t be able to perform at Wrestlemania. He talked in Spanish, a language I don’t know well, but I did catch him say lucha libre. He said he was happy to be in the seis, uno, nueve, or 619.
-Vickie gets rolled out in her chair by Teddy. She says she knows Rey is hurt, but doesn’t give a damn. Teddy rolls her closer to the ring. All she cares about is what Rey did to her. Take a look. They roll the footage from last week with Edge’s proposal and Mysterio crashing the party. Vickie called Rey hitting her intentional. Rey said she had it all wrong, but told him to shut up. She says she’s not going to apologize for what she’s about to do. She calls for a ref to come to the ring. Tonight Rey is going to face famalia. Her nephew, the ECW champion, Chavo Guerrero.
-Coach and Cole can’t believe Vickie is making Mysterio compete while injured.
-Chavo makes his way to the ring.
CHAVO GUERRERO VS. REY MYSTERIO
-Chavo cheap shots Rey by running at him before the bell. Rey comes back with a headscissors and goes for the DDT, but Chavo face plants him. Rey is down in pain and Chavo stalks him as they go to break about 1:00 in.
-Back from the break Chavo is working on Rey’s arm. They show Vickie at ringside with a full blown smile. Chavo hits a dropkick and goes back to work on the arm. He hits a baseball slide on the injured arm that sends Rey to the outside. Chavo follows him out and throws him into the apron. An irish whip by Chavo is turned into a standing waist lock by Rey. He tries to push Chavo into the ropes for a roll up, but Chavo throws him off. Rey comes back knocking Chavo outside then hits the west coast pop 2 to the floor.
-Back inside Rey goes up top and Chavo cuts him off. They battle atop the ropes and Rey shoves him off. Another west coast pop for 2. Vickie is shown outside again, now upset. Chavo battles back and hits a sunset flip from the top and Rey rolls through hitting a dropkick to the face. He hangs Chavo up on the ropes and hits the seis, uno, nueve! He goes up for a springboard, but the arm gives out. Rey tries to go off the top rope now, but Chavo catches him and throws him off.
-Chavo goes for the 3 amigos and ends it with a brain buster. Chavo goes up top for a frog splash and Rey moves out of the way. He rolls up Chavo and gets the win.
***Rey Mysterio heads off to surgery fresh off a win in 9:00. (*3/4).
-After the match Vickie yells for them to stop the music and celebration. She tells Rey she hurt him and it’s her turn to hurt him.
-Big Show makes his first appearance in his return in ring gear. He’s defenitely dropped some weight. 108 could be legit. He throws Rey into the corner and hits an avalanche. He steps on Rey’s biceps as his wiggles around in pain. Vice grip on the bicep! Rey is screaming no. Big Show picks him up and holds him for about 10 seconds before hitting a chokeslam. With Mysterio sprawled out on the mat, Big show stares at the camera.
