ECW on Sci-Fi: TV Report
1/01/08
Miami, FL
American Airlines Arena
-The show opens with shots of the battle royal from WWE.com’s mini-mania. A couple entrants are shown walking the aisle and Kane eliminating Mark Henry. Now it’s time to jump ahead to Kane’s 9 second victory over Guerrero Jr. where he captured the ECW title at ‘Mania.
-They cut to the arena and Kane is headed to the ring. Flames rise out of the ring posts and Joey Styles welcomes us to the “new ECW.” Where the big boys play! He didn’t say that.
-Kane speaks! He says at ‘Mania he had the satisfaction of releasing destruction. He runs down the names of all the giants that he took out to win the battle royal. Later that night when he finally faced Chavo, he decimated him in 8 seconds to become the new ECW champion. It was 9! He says ECW, and pauses. An “ECW!” chant breaks out. ECW has had some of the most exciting and spectacular moments in sports entertainment, but now that I’m champion you haven’t seen anything yet.
-CM Punk’s music plays. Oh Boy.
-The crowd erupts as he heads to the ring holding up the case. Tazz says this it, he’s cashing in the bank! Joey wonders if it is time.
-Kane mentions Punk had a good day Sunday too. If you’re here to do what I think you are, you won’t have a good day today. Punk says he admits he’s a little jealous. He has a contract for a championship match, but Kane actually has the belt. He tells Kane he can have the match whenever he wants though, next year, next month, next week. If you really want to press me, it could be right now.
-Chavo is headed out.
-He says no one is getting an ECW title match before him. He calls Kane’s win a fluke. Kane says he won in 8 seconds, which has to be some sort of a record. Punk says Chavo not only made history, but also did it in record fashion buddy. He calls Chavo a proud record holder and gives him congratulations. Chavo says he had to do something no one else did at ‘Mania. Prepare for 24 different opponents. He says Kane tricked him by sneaking up form behind, but next time he’ll be ready for his tricks. He says when he gets another shot at the belt he’ll make everyone proud to call him ECW champ.
-Chavo says Punk and Kane will be in a match together tonight. Estrada let him know that Kane and Punk have a match against himself and Benjamin.
-Benjamin comes out. He says the only reason Punk has the briefcase is because two people pushed him off as he was about to grab it and sent him falling 20 feet through a ladder. That a normal man would still be in the hospital, but he’s the gold standard and ready to go tonight. Punk calls him “goldylocks.” He says Benjamin can come up with any snazzy nickname for himself that he wants, but he can’t call himself money in the bank.
-Segment ends and they head to commercial.
-Stevie Richards makes his way to the ring. Styles recaps his current feud with Mike Knox. They show some WWE Mobile footage of their encounters backstage.
-It looks like he’ll be facing Mike Knox who makes his way to the ring.
STEVIE RICHARDS VS. MIKE KNOX
-Knox forces Richards into the corner and drives his shoulder into the gut. Stevie hits an enzuigiri that sends Knox outside. Richards follows out after him, but gets hit with a back elbow. In the ring again Knox hits a much-delayed vertical suplex. Knox grinds his boot across Richards’ face then puts in a bear hug. Stevie gets out if it, but soon finds himself in it again.
-Knox hits a back suplex after he breaks the bear hug. He goes for a leg drop from the 2nd rope, but Richards moves. Atomic drop by Richards, then some kicks to the leg and chest. Knox goes down to the mat and gets more kicks to the back. Richards goes for another kick and Knox catches the leg. He picks Richards up and hits a back breaker. He then hits his corkscrew faceplant finisher and gets the win.
***Mike Knox gets the win in 3:59. (3/4*).
-Styles and Tazz take us back to the HOF ceremony. A highlight package of the night is aired. Woo!
-We get the video package for ‘Mania in Houston next year that they showed at ‘Mania. Styles says that maybe we can get Tazz on a horse.
-Tazz is in the ring with Colin Delaney. He asks him about his experience at ‘Mania. He says he didn’t get beat up, but he hopes to be at ‘Mania next year with a match and contract.
-Estrada comes out and says he has great news for Colin. He wants to offer Colin his first official contract. Colin marks out and says REALLY? Estrada says yes, you deserve it, but there is one thing he forgot to mention. APRIL FOOLS! Colin makes an awesome sad face. Estrada says that if he wants to earn a contract all he has to do is beat this man.
-Well, it’s the Big Show. Styles says, “Oh My God.”
BIG SHOW VS. COLIN DELANEY
-Colin just stands there looking sad. He starts to walk away to the side and Big Show moves along with him, putting the block on. Colin then tries to walk away and Big Show grabs his shoulder. Colin turns back looking at him and Big Show shakes his head. He puts him in a sleeper style hold. Colin’s out. It’s over.
***Big Show wins in 47 seconds.
-After the bell Big Show slammed him down. Poor Colin. I thought Big Show was a friendly giant?
-They hype the main event of Kane/Punk vs. Benjamin/Chavo.
-Styles and Tazz send us back to Raw to take a look at the Flair Farewell ceremony. The video package obviously can’t capture the actual happening on Raw, but still a good package.
-Wow, main event time. Chavo makes his way to the ring first. Styles asks Tazz what losing in 9 seconds does to Chavo? Tazz say he doesn’t know what it’s like to lose that quickly, but he has to pick himself help.
-Shelton makes his way to the ring. Tazz says he’s sold on him and he’s the real deal.
-Punk makes his way to the ring. Styles wonders if he’s 100% after MITB and wrestling Jericho 24 hours later on Raw.
-Kane heads out. Styles doesn’t want to assume anything, but he bets Kane is 100% and confident. Tazz puts him over as champion.
CHAVO GUERRERO JR. & SHELTON BENJAMIN VS. KANE & CM PUNK
-Punk and Benjamin start it off. “CM PUNK” chants erupt at the bell. Punk hits a snap suplex into a pin for 2. He tags in Kane. Kane throws some uppercuts, then hits the low dropkick to Benjamin’s face. Kane hits a huge clothesline and somehow hurt his knee. He’s limping around. Chavo comes in and Kane seems to be ok now.
-Shelton gets back in and is quickly tossed to the floor. He sends Chavo outside too. Chavo gets on the apron and Punk hits him with a kick that sends him back to the floor. They head to break 2:20 in.
-Back from the break Kane is working on Benjamin. He’s pounding on him in the corner and Punk gets the tag. He hits a kick to the back of Shelton’s head for 2. Benjamin hits a kick out of a back body drop attempt and makes a pin to Chavo. Punk gets hit with a backbreaker then a jaw breaker. Some european uppercuts in the corner on Punk then a splash. He goes for another, but Punk catches him and lifts him up in the GTS position. Benjamin runs in and kicks him in the face.
-Shelton gets the official tag in and puts in a choke hold. Punk makes it out of the hold and gets hit with a running knee in the gut for 2. A tag to Chavo is made and he comes in hitting a slingshot knee drop. He applies a bow and arrow variation, then goes into the Muta lock. Now back into a bow and arrow variation. Punk wiggles away, but ends up in the heel corner. Punk recharges and hits a bunch of back and forth elbows to the heels, but Chavo puts an end to it.
-Shelton gets back in and whips Punk into the corner. He goes for a body slam, but Punk uses his weight to come down on Shelton. The crowd is trying to rally around Punk for a hot tag. Chavo gets the tag. Snap mare by Chavo and he puts on an armbar. Chavo goes for 3 amigo, and Punk reverses and pushes Chavo into the corner. He hits the running knee and bulldog. He makes the hot tag to Kane and Shelton gets the tag.
-Kane hits some uppercuts and body slam. Punk and Chavo are outside. Kane throws several fists to Shelton in the corner. Now clothesline. He goes for another and Shelton hits a back elbow. He comes out of the corner and Kane grabs him for a choke slam. He elbows out of it and hits a big boot. Kane then hits one of his own and heads up top. Chavo runs in and crotches him. Kane falls from the buckles to the mat. Punk tags himself in and goes for the springboard clothesline. Benjamin moves, but Punk lands well and hits a spin wheel kick. He then hits the GTS on Shelton to get the win.
